Linda checked the address one more time, parked her car in the driveway and got out. Rick’s condo complex, row style rather than the more typical apartment style, looked tasteful and expensive. The exterior was red brick with large front windows shuttered in white. The walkway lead up to the carved wooden door. The condo looked solid and masculine, a perfect match for a man like Rick.

She had not seen him since they had shopped for the bathtubs and flooring together a few days ago. But she talked to him on the phone, sometimes more than once a day, checking details, seeking advice, learning from his experience, coming to rely on his expertise.

She fell a little more in love with the O’Brian house every day even though it was as cranky and difficult as an old woman. She loved the work. She loved getting up in the morning and having a place to go, something to do. Not just something, but a job that she loved. She wondered what had taken her so long to get back into the swing of life, and even felt reluctantly grateful to her daughter for setting the wheels in motion. And today, to go along with her rediscovered passion for old houses, the new and improved Linda Starr was having her very first ride on a motorcycle.

Rick must have been waiting for her, because he opened the door as she came up the walk. He was dressed in a white T-shirt and jeans with black leather chaps strapped over top of them. The outfit hinted at a renegade inside the successful businessman and the chaps made his legs look long and strong and sexy. The rooster tail even looked as though it belonged to this Rick, and she remembered suddenly, how it had felt underneath her fingertips, soft and springy.

She stopped and regarded him, remembered other things. The taste of his lips on hers, the hardness of his body pressed against the length of hers in that bathtub.

“This isn’t a date is it?” she blurted out.

He threw back his head and laughed.

“Not if that would make you feel awkward. Besides—” he lowered his voice and leaned toward her “—once you’ve shared a bathtub with a guy the awkward stage is over. You want to see the place, or do you want to go?”

Of course she had that purely feminine desire to see his place and to see what secrets it would reveal. His home was tidy and tasteful, the decor sophisticated. The only secret she learned was one she had already guessed: Rick Chase belonged to a much larger world than she did.

“While I was spending my days wiping noses as the classroom helper and devoting my life to keeping the tablecloths snowy-white, you were seeing Africa,” she said, feeling inadequate, touching the hand-carved wooden giraffe that fit so perfectly with the leather in his living room.

He touched her arm. “Linda, don’t say that as if one choice was better than the other. They were just different.
